Elaeagnus umbellata
autumn olive
Overview
Elaeagnus umbellata is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub native to eastern Asia, reaching 10-16 feet (3-5 m) tall and wide, often with thorny branches. The alternate leaves are 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long, green above and coated in silvery scales beneath that give the whole plant a gray cast. Clusters of small, tubular cream to pale-yellow flowers open in mid to late spring and are strongly fragrant. By autumn the shrub bears abundant small round fruits about 0.3 inch (8 mm) wide, red and flecked with silvery dots, edible and tart. Its roots fix nitrogen through bacterial nodules, letting it grow on poor, disturbed soils where many shrubs cannot. E. umbellata was planted widely for erosion control and wildlife food but spreads aggressively from bird-dispersed seed and is regulated as invasive across much of the central and eastern United States. It forms dense stands that shade out native vegetation and alter soil chemistry through nitrogen enrichment. It tolerates drought, salt, and a broad range of soils.
Native Range
Elaeagnus umbellata is native to eastern Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. It was introduced to North America in the 1830s and later promoted for soil stabilization and wildlife plantings, and has since naturalized throughout the central and eastern United States.Suggested Uses
Elaeagnus umbellata was once grown for erosion control, windbreaks, and wildlife food, but those uses have ended across its invasive range. It now has no recommended landscape use in much of North America, where effort focuses on removal. Birds feed on the fruit and spread the seed into new ground. How to Identify
