Acacia brownii
heath wattle
Overview
Acacia brownii is a small, wiry, prickly evergreen shrub reaching 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 m) tall and 1.5-3 feet (0.45-0.9 m) wide, with an erect to spreading habit. In place of true leaves it carries needle-like phyllodes 0.3-0.8 inch (8-20 mm) long, stiff, sharply pointed, and spreading from the slender stems. Round yellow flower heads about 0.3 inch (6-8 mm) across are borne singly in the phyllode axils from late winter into spring, scattered along the branches. Narrow seed pods follow, drying to brown and splitting to release seed. The species grows in heath, scrub, and open woodland across southeastern Australia on sandy and gravelly soils, often in seasonally damp ground. It tolerates poor soil and short drought but is comparatively short-lived, like many small wattles, lasting around 5-10 years. The sharp phyllodes make it a barrier or habitat plant rather than one for high-traffic edges. As a legume it fixes nitrogen and can be used to cover and condition poor ground.
Native Range
Acacia brownii is native to southeastern Australia, from Queensland through New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. It grows in heath, scrub, and open woodland on sandy and gravelly soils, often where the ground is seasonally damp.Suggested Uses
Planted in native, heath, and habitat gardens, as a low prickly barrier, and for nitrogen-fixing cover on poor soil. Suited to bird-shelter and revegetation plantings. Spaced 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 m) apart in groups. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Acacia brownii grows in full sun to light shade in well-drained sandy or gravelly soil and tolerates poor, low-nutrient ground. Established plants handle short drought and seasonal winter wet, though they are intolerant of permanently waterlogged soil. Cold hardiness covers light to moderate frost, roughly USDA zones 8-10. As a legume it fixes its own nitrogen and needs no feeding. Plants are short-lived and are renewed from seed, which germinates readily after heat or scarification.Pruning
A light trim after flowering keeps the small shrub compact and removes spent flowering wood. Plants tolerate shaping but recover slowly from hard cuts into bare old wood. No routine heavy pruning is undertaken.Pruning Schedule
