Side-dressing

🧑‍🌾 Cultivation Basic

Side-dressing delivers supplemental nutrients to heavy-feeding crops partway through their growth cycle. Granular fertilizer is placed in a shallow furrow 4–6 inches from the stem and lightly covered with soil. Tomatoes, corn, and squash commonly need nitrogen side-dressing 3–4 weeks after transplanting. This technique prevents early-season nutrient burn while supporting later fruit development.
