    Also known as: punicea, puniceum

    A colour epithet covering the crimson-to-purple band of red, deeper and bluer than scarlet. Botanists reach for it when a flower, stem or bract is red with an unmistakable purple cast. Appears as puniceus (masculine), punicea (feminine), or puniceum (neuter).

    Etymology

    From Latin puniceus, meaning "reddish-purple."

    Diplacus puniceus (red bush monkeyflower) and Symphyotrichum puniceum (swamp aster) both carry the epithet for their purple-tinged red colouring.
