    A colour epithet describing a brilliant scarlet-red, brighter and more orange-leaning than the darker sanguineus, and the feminine form used where the genus is feminine. The name recalls the kermes insect once used to make scarlet dye. Appears as coccineus (masculine), coccinea (feminine), or coccineum (neuter).

    Etymology

    From Latin coccum, meaning "scarlet dye," from the kermes scale insects that yielded it.
