    A colour epithet describing a deep, dark red the colour of blood, richer and less orange than coccineus, and the feminine form used where the genus is feminine. It is applied to flowers, stems and autumn foliage alike. Appears as sanguineus (masculine), sanguinea (feminine), or sanguineum (neuter).

    Etymology

    From Latin sanguis/sanguinis, meaning "blood."
