Miniatus
/min-ee-AH-tus/🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced
Also known as: miniata, miniatum
A colour epithet naming the vivid orange-scarlet of cinnabar. It is a warmer, more orange red than the pure scarlet of coccineus or the deep blood-red of sanguineus, a distinction worth holding on to when reading plant descriptions. Appears as miniatus (masculine), miniata (feminine), or miniatum (neuter).
Etymology
From Latin miniatus, meaning "cinnabar-red," from minium (cinnabar, red lead).
Example
“Clivia miniata (clivia) and Castilleja miniata (common paintbrush) both show the orange-leaning scarlet the epithet names.”
