    Potting Up

    /POT-ing UP/
    🧑‍🌾 Cultivation Basic

Also known as: repotting, transplanting up

The practice of moving a plant from its current container into a larger one, providing more room for root development. Potting up is necessary when a plant becomes root-bound or pot-bound (roots circling the inside of the container). It is typically done by selecting a pot one or two sizes larger, adding fresh potting mix, and gently loosening the root ball before replanting.

    Etymology

Old English pott (pot, vessel) + up (upward, increasing)

    Example

These seedlings are root-bound and need potting up into 4-inch containers before they can be planted outside.
