Parthenocarpy

✂️ Propagation●●● Advanced

Also known as: seedless fruiting

Parthenocarpic fruit develops without pollen reaching the ovule, resulting in seedless produce. Persian cucumbers, many greenhouse cucumbers, and some banana and citrus varieties are parthenocarpic. This trait is especially valuable in greenhouse production where pollinators are absent. Cross-pollination of parthenocarpic varieties by monoecious types can produce unwanted seeds and misshapen fruit.

Etymology

Greek parthenos (virgin) + karpos (fruit)
