A simple vegetative propagation method where an established plant is physically separated into two or more sections, each retaining a portion of the root system and above-ground growth. Works best with clump-forming perennials.

From Latin divisio, meaning "a dividing."

Example

Divide overgrown hostas in early spring by splitting the root clump with a sharp spade.
