Callus

/KAL-us/
✂️ Propagation●● Intermediate

Also known as: wound tissue, callous

A mass of parenchyma cells that develops over wounds or cut surfaces on plants. In pruning, callus tissue (wound wood) gradually rolls over the pruning cut. In propagation, callus forms at the base of cuttings before roots differentiate. Callus formation is a sign of healing but does not indicate pathogen exclusion.

Etymology

Latin callus (hard skin)

Example

After proper pruning cuts, callus tissue gradually grows from the branch collar to seal the wound.
