    The practice of applying a layer of organic or inorganic material (such as wood chips, straw, leaves, or gravel) to the soil surface around plants. Mulch conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and improves soil structure as organic mulches decompose.

    Etymology

    From Middle English molsh, meaning "soft, moist."

    Example

    Apply 2-3 inches of wood chip mulch around trees, keeping it away from the trunk.
