Trillium cuneatum
little sweet betsy
Overview
Trillium cuneatum is a spring-flowering perennial in the family Melanthiaceae, growing 8-16 inches (20-40 cm) tall from a thick rhizome. A single erect stem carries a whorl of three broad, ovate leaves 3-6 inches (8-15 cm) long, mottled in shades of light and dark green, silver, and maroon. The stalkless flower sits directly on the leaf whorl, with three erect, lance-shaped petals 1.5-3 inches (4-8 cm) long in maroon, bronze, greenish-yellow, or rarely pure yellow. The flower gives off a faint scent likened to spices or ripe fruit that draws beetles and flies. Beneath the petals sit three spreading green sepals. Plants emerge in early spring, flower, and the foliage withers by midsummer as the plant returns to dormancy. Seeds bear an oily appendage that ants carry off, dispersing the plant. T. cuneatum grows slowly, taking several years from seed to first bloom, and is slow to recover from disturbance once rooted. It forms loose colonies on rich, wooded slopes.
Native Range
Native to the southeastern United States, Trillium cuneatum is centered in the southern Appalachians and ranges from Kentucky and North Carolina south to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. It grows in rich deciduous woods, limestone slopes, and ravines, often in deep leaf litter.Suggested Uses
Used in woodland and native plant gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized plantings under deciduous trees. Its summer dormancy pairs it with ferns and later perennials that fill the gap it leaves. It suits collections of native spring wildflowers and shaded rock gardens. How to Identify
