Overview
Trillium cernuum is a spring-flowering woodland perennial 8-18 inches (20-45 cm) tall, growing from a short rhizome. A single stem bears a whorl of three broad, diamond-shaped leaves 2-5 inches (5-13 cm) long near the top. One flower hangs on a curved stalk that bends below the leaves, so the bloom is partly hidden when viewed from above. The flower has three white, sometimes pink-tinged, wavy-edged petals 0.5-1 inch (1.3-2.5 cm) long with dark red-purple anthers at the center. Flowering occurs from April to June. The flower is followed by a red, berry-like fruit. The plant takes several years to reach flowering size from seed and dies back to the rhizome by midsummer. It grows on moist, shaded forest floors and spreads slowly, forming scattered groups rather than dense stands.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America from Newfoundland and Quebec west to Manitoba and south through the northeastern and north-central United States to the Appalachians. Grows on moist, shaded floors of deciduous and mixed forests, swampy woods, and stream banks in rich, humus-laden soils.Suggested Uses
Grown in shaded woodland and native plant gardens among ferns and other spring wildflowers, spaced 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) apart. It flowers in spring then dies back, leaving gaps that later-emerging plants can fill. It suits moist woodland sites and does not grow in dry or sunny conditions. How to Identify
