Overview

Tradescantia zebrina is the inch plant, trailing 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) per stem and spreading indefinitely by rooting at nodes. Upper leaf surfaces have green and silver metallic stripes; undersides are deep purple — the species name 'zebrina' means 'zebra-striped.' Stems extend approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) per day in favorable conditions, giving the common name. Cuttings placed in water produce visible roots within minutes to hours. The stem base becomes bare as lower leaves senesce while tips continue growing — starting fresh from cuttings every 6–12 months produces a fuller plant than maintaining an aging one. Classified as invasive outdoors in frost-free zones (zones 9+) — the fast growth and easy rooting that make it convenient indoors make it a problem in warm-climate landscapes. The sap may cause contact dermatitis on sensitive skin. Native to Mexico and Central America. Low to bright indirect light — the silver metallic sheen and purple undersides are more vivid in brighter conditions. Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) to dry between waterings. Mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Small pink-purple three-petaled flowers produced sporadically. Growth rate is fast. Well-draining soil.

Native Range

Native to Mexico and Central America. Naturalized and invasive in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Suggested Uses

Grown in hanging baskets or on shelves in containers of 0.5–2 gallons (2–8 liters) where stems trail. Not recommended for outdoor planting in frost-free zones (invasive). Sap may irritate skin. Mildly toxic to pets.

How to Identify

Identified by green and silver metallic-striped upper leaf surfaces with deep purple undersides on trailing stems. The silver metallic sheen and purple undersides are the combined diagnostic. Distinguished from Tradescantia 'Nanouk' by the thinner, metallic-sheened leaves (not thick and pastel-pink).
