Overview
Sphagnum palustre is a robust peat moss that forms soft, spongy carpets and low hummocks in bogs, fens, wet woodland, and other waterlogged ground. The pale green to ochre or pinkish shoots reach 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) and gather into a compact rounded head (capitulum) of crowded young branches. Down the stem, branches hang in clusters of spreading and drooping forms, and the rounded, hooded leaves hold water in large, empty cells, so the plant can store many times its own weight in water. It draws no water through roots, having none, and soaks up moisture across its whole surface. By holding water and acidifying its surroundings, it helps build and maintain peat. It is intolerant of drying out and of lime-rich or nutrient-rich water, which let other plants displace it.
Native Range
Widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America, with scattered occurrences elsewhere. It grows in bogs, fens, and wet woodland wherever ground stays wet and acidic to neutral.Suggested Uses
Grown in bog gardens, around wildlife-pond margins, and in peatland restoration and conservation, where it rebuilds living bog surface. It is also used fresh to line hanging baskets and as a moisture-holding medium for propagation and carnivorous plants. Its water-holding carpets keep the surface of wet plantings moist. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, Sphagnum palustre produces no flowers. Round, dark spore capsules are raised on short stalks above the head in summer, splitting by a lid to release spores, though capsules are not formed every year.

Care Guide
Sphagnum palustre grows in full sun to part shade on permanently wet, acidic to neutral peat or wet soil at a soil pH of about 4.0-6.5. It has no roots and absorbs water over its whole surface, so it needs ground or water that stays constantly wet, ideally rainwater rather than hard tap water. It tolerates low nutrients and helps acidify its surroundings, but lime-rich or fertile water lets competitors crowd it out. In cultivation it suits bog gardens, the margins of wildlife ponds, and lime-free containers kept wet. It is intolerant of drying, which bleaches and kills the shoots, though damp fragments can regrow. Live peat moss is also used to line hanging baskets and as a propagation medium.Pruning
Sphagnum palustre is not pruned. The carpets spread on their own over wet ground, and overgrowing litter or taller plants can be lifted or pulled off by hand to keep the moss exposed.Container Growing
