Overview
Sphagnum fallax is a peat moss that forms soft, loose carpets in wet, acid ground, the individual shoots growing upright in dense stands 2-8 inches (5-20 cm) tall. Each shoot ends in a flat-topped head, or capitulum, of crowded young branches, and lower down the branches hang in clusters along a slender stem. The colour ranges from pale yellow-green to mid-green, sometimes tinged ochre in sun. Like all bog mosses it has no roots; the dead lower parts of the stem build up as peat while the tips keep growing. Its leaves hold large amounts of water in special empty cells, so the living carpet stays wet and spongy. It grows in bogs, wet heath, poor fens, ditches, and the wet margins of pools across Europe, northern Asia, and North America, often a frequent bog moss of disturbed and recovering peatland. By holding water and acidifying its surroundings, it helps build and maintain the peat bog. It spreads by growth and by fragments that root where they land. Its flat-topped heads and pale green, loosely branched shoots separate it from denser, more colourful bog mosses of the same wet ground.
Native Range
Native to Europe, northern Asia, and North America. It grows in bogs, wet heath, poor fens, ditches, and the wet margins of pools on acid, waterlogged ground.Suggested Uses
Grown in bog gardens, on permanently wet acid ground, and in carnivorous-plant and peatland plantings as a living surface layer. It is used in conservation work to help restore damaged peat bogs. It also holds moisture around acid-loving plants in wet beds. How to Identify

Care Guide
Sphagnum fallax grows in permanently wet, acid, low-nutrient ground in full sun to partial shade. It needs soft, lime-free water and a pH of about 3.5 to 5.5, and it dies where water is hard, enriched, or polluted. The moss draws no nutrients from soil and takes water and minerals straight from rain and the surrounding bog. It is grown in bog gardens, on wet peat, and in cultivation for peatland restoration. It spreads by shoot growth and by fragments that re-root in wet ground. Drying out, liming, or added fertiliser quickly kills it.Container Growing
