Overview

Roepera spp. is a genus of about 50 succulent-leaved shrubs and subshrubs in the family Zygophyllaceae, segregated from Zygophyllum spp. and centered on the arid parts of southern Africa. Plants are low and bushy, 1–4 ft (0.3–1.2 m) tall, with jointed, often reddish stems and paired, fleshy, club- or paddle-shaped leaves that store water against drought. The flowers are small, with four or five petals in yellow, orange, cream, or white, often marked with red or orange at the base, and open in the warm season. Capsule fruits with several angles or wings follow and hold the seed. Roepera spp. grows on dry, stony, and saline flats and slopes, tolerating drought, heat, salt, and poor soil where few shrubs survive. The fleshy leaves and tough habit make it a component of arid scrub and a pioneer on disturbed desert ground. Most species are frost-tender. Some are grazed by stock, though certain species can cause photosensitivity in sheep under heavy feeding.

Native Range

Roepera spp. is native mainly to southern Africa, especially the arid west of South Africa and Namibia, with some species reaching North Africa, the Mediterranean, and western Asia. It grows on dry, stony, and saline flats, coastal sands, and desert slopes.

Roepera spp. is grown in dry, water-wise, and coastal gardens, rockeries, and saline or desert plantings where its succulent leaves and salt tolerance are useful. It is set 18–36 inches (45–90 cm) apart on hot, sunny banks and gravel beds. It also serves in restoration of arid and saline ground.

Roepera spp. grows in full sun and sharp-draining, sandy, stony, or saline soil at a pH of 6.5–8.5, matching its arid native ground. Established plants are drought- and salt-tolerant and need little or no summer water, rotting in wet or heavy soil. The genus tolerates intense heat and reflected sun but most species are frost-tender below about 28°F (−2°C). It needs no feeding, as lean soil keeps it compact. Propagation is by seed, which germinates after warmth and moisture, or by cuttings of firm stems. Few pests trouble it in a hot, dry, open site.

Pruning

Roepera spp. needs little pruning beyond removing dead or frost-damaged stems and a light trim to keep a compact shape. Cutting back leggy growth in spring renews older plants. The fleshy stems are brittle, so trimming is done with clean cuts.
