Overview
Phlox divaricata ssp. laphamii spp. 'Chattahoochee' is a colorful woodland phlox, growing 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) tall and spreading to 12–18 inches (30–45 cm). Discovered near the Chattahoochee River in Georgia. Lavender-blue flowers with a dark red-purple eye in April and May — the bicolor eye pattern is uncommon among woodland phlox and creates a more visually complex display than the solid-colored P. divaricata forms. The subspecies laphamii spp. has slightly narrower petals and a more southern range than the typical northern P. divaricata. Semi-evergreen dark green foliage forms a spreading ground cover. Moist, humus-rich partial shade to full shade. Lightly fragrant. The eye pattern — a dark ring of color surrounding the flower center — adds visual depth that draws close examination. Light shearing after bloom keeps the form. Deer may eat phlox.
