Overview
Peperomia obtusifolia is the baby rubber plant — a compact, non-toxic houseplant growing 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) tall and wide. Dark green thick glossy rounded leaves with a succulent-like texture — the 'baby rubber plant' name reflects the visual similarity to Ficus elastica (rubber tree) in miniature, though the plants are unrelated. In the pepper family (Piperaceae) — related to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The thick succulent-like leaves store water, making this more drought-tolerant than most tropical houseplants. NON-TOXIC to pets and children — one of the safest houseplants. Slender upright green-white rat-tail flower spikes appear sporadically (insignificant). Variegated forms ('Variegata' with cream margins) are popular. Compact enough for desktops and shelves. Easy to propagate from leaf cuttings. Bright indirect to moderate light.
