Peperomia leptostachya
slender peperomia
Eastern Australia, Pacific islands, and tropical Asia
Overview
Peperomia leptostachya is a small evergreen perennial herb with fleshy, semi-succulent stems that root at the lower nodes and ascend to 6-16 inches (15-40 cm). The leaves are alternate, fleshy, and broadly ovate to nearly round, 0.6-2 inches (1.5-5 cm) long, mid-green and dotted with translucent glands. Minute greenish-white flowers without petals are packed along slender erect spikes 1.2-3 inches (3-8 cm) long, the slender spikes giving the species its name, and tiny rounded fruits follow. P. leptostachya grows as a lithophyte and ground-creeping herb on shaded rocks, boulders, and tree bases in moist, sheltered sites. Its natural range extends through eastern Australia and across the Pacific islands and tropical Asia. The fleshy leaves store moisture, letting the plant withstand short dry spells, but it is frost-sensitive and the foliage scorches in direct midday sun. In poorly drained soil the fleshy stems are prone to rot. In frost-free gardens and indoors it spreads slowly to form a low, trailing mat.
Native Range
Peperomia leptostachya occurs naturally in eastern Australia, mainly Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales, and extends across the Pacific islands and parts of tropical Asia. It grows on shaded rocks and tree bases in moist forest.Suggested Uses
P. leptostachya is grown as a groundcover in shaded, frost-free gardens, as a container plant, and in terrariums. It spreads slowly to form a low, trailing mat and suits planting among rocks or at the base of larger plants. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
P. leptostachya grows in part to full shade in a warm, frost-free position. It needs a well-drained, organic-rich or rocky medium and even moisture during the growing season, with reduced watering in cool weather. The fleshy stems rot in waterlogged soil, so drainage matters more than fertility. Foliage scorches in direct midday sun and is damaged by frost, limiting outdoor use to USDA zones 10-11. It also grows well as a container or terrarium plant in bright, indirect light.Pruning
Pinching the stem tips keeps the plant compact and encourages branching. Spent flower spikes and damaged stems can be removed at any time. No seasonal pruning is required.Container Growing
