Overview

Muhlenbergia lindheimeri is Lindheimer's muhly — the largest and bluest-foliaged Muhlenbergia, growing 36-60 inches (90-150 cm) tall with plumes and 36-48 inches (90-120 cm) wide. Named after Ferdinand Lindheimer, the 'Father of Texas Botany'. Blue-gray to silvery-blue narrow narrow-textured arching foliage — the most intensely blue of any Muhlenbergia species, providing year-round blue color. Tall silvery to pale purple airy plumes in October and November. Native to Texas Hill Country limestone grasslands — giving extreme heat, drought, alkaline soil, and rocky condition tolerance. The largest Muhlenbergia for substantial blue architectural presence — significantly larger than M. capillaris (pink muhly) and M. reverchonii (seep muhly). Semi-evergreen in mild winters. Hardy to zone 6.

Native Range

Muhlenbergia lindheimeri is native to Texas and northeastern Mexico — Texas Hill Country limestone grasslands.

Suggested Uses

Used as a large blue architectural specimen, in xeric gardens, Texas Hill Country landscapes, and containers of 10+ gallons (38+ liters). The largest and bluest Muhlenbergia. Alkaline and drought specialist.

How to Identify

Identified by blue-gray to silvery-blue narrow-textured arching foliage forming the largest Muhlenbergia clump with tall silvery fall plumes. The blue foliage color and the large scale separate this from the smaller pink muhly (M. capillaris) and seep muhly (M. reverchonii). Texas Hill Country native.
