Overview

Dracaena masoniana (syn. Sansevieria masoniana) is the whale fin snake plant, growing 24–48 inches (60–120 cm) tall. Typically produces a single large paddle-shaped leaf per rhizome growth point — each leaf can reach 48 inches (120 cm) tall and 10 inches (25 cm) wide. The species name honors Maurice Mason, an English plantsman. Mottled dark and light green with irregular darker blotches in a camouflage-like pattern. Growth rate is extremely slow — single-leaf specimens may take 1–3 years to produce a second leaf from the rhizome. Same cultural tolerance as all snake plants: low light, drought, and neglect. Overwatering causes rhizome rot — the single large leaf has a massive rhizome beneath the soil that stores water and is vulnerable to saturation. Allow soil to dry completely. Formerly Sansevieria masoniana; reclassified to Dracaena. Native to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mildly toxic to cats and dogs (saponins). Propagation by division of the rhizome; leaf cuttings are possible but extremely slow and may not reproduce the cultivar pattern. The single-leaf form requires a weighted or deep pot to prevent toppling.

Native Range

Dracaena masoniana is native to Central Africa — Congo.

Suggested Uses

Grown in containers of 2–3 gallons (8–12 liters) in low to bright indirect light. The single large paddle-shaped leaf suits minimalist interiors and sculptural plant displays. Use a heavy or wide-based pot to prevent toppling. Mildly toxic to cats and dogs.

How to Identify

Identified by a single large paddle-shaped leaf up to 48 inches (120 cm) tall and 10 inches (25 cm) wide, with mottled dark and light green camouflage-like patterning. The single massive paddle form is diagnostic — no other commonly cultivated snake plant produces leaves this large. Named after Maurice Mason.

Care & Maintenance

Care Guide

Low to bright indirect light. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings — the large rhizome is vulnerable to rot. Extremely slow-growing (1–3 years between new leaves). Use a heavy pot to prevent toppling. Mildly toxic to cats and dogs (saponins). Formerly Sansevieria masoniana.

Pruning

No routine pruning. Remove only fully damaged or rotted leaves at the base. Divide the rhizome for propagation when offsets develop.

Maintenance Level

very low
