Dactylorhiza maculata
heath spotted orchid
Overview
Dactylorhiza maculata is a tuberous perennial orchid 15-50 cm (6-20 in) tall, growing from palmately lobed underground tubers. It forms a basal rosette of narrow, keeled leaves usually marked with dark transverse blotches, with a few smaller leaves up the stem. From early summer it produces a dense conical to cylindrical spike 4-12 cm (1.6-4.7 in) long of many small flowers in shades of pale pink to lilac, rarely white, each with a broad three-lobed lip patterned with darker loops and dots. The middle lobe of the lip is small and the flowers carry a slender spur behind. It grows singly or in scattered groups rather than spreading clumps, and depends on soil fungi for germination and early growth, which makes it slow and unreliable to establish from seed. Plants die back to the tuber after seeding and reappear the following spring. It favours damp, acid to neutral ground in heaths, bogs, moors, and damp grassland. It needs low-fertility, reliably moist soil and open conditions, and does not transplant or cultivate easily.
Native Range
Dactylorhiza maculata is native across Europe, from Iberia and the British Isles to Scandinavia and Russia, and into North Africa and parts of western Asia. It grows on damp heaths, moors, bogs, fens, and unimproved acid to neutral grassland. It is not native to North America.Suggested Uses
Planted in damp wildflower meadows, bog gardens, and naturalistic acid borders where conditions stay moist and lean. Used in conservation and pollinator plantings, with flowers visited by bees and other insects. Its fungal dependence and slow growth make it suited to undisturbed naturalistic settings rather than conventional borders. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Dactylorhiza maculata in reliably moist, low-fertility, acid to neutral soil in full sun to light shade, matching its heath and bog habitats. It needs the right soil fungi to thrive and fails in rich, dry, or disturbed ground. The plant is hardy and needs no winter protection across temperate zones. It establishes slowly, so set out pot-grown plants or dormant tubers rather than relying on seed. Water in dry spells, as drought during growth weakens the tubers. Leave the foliage to die down naturally; feeding favours competing grasses and is unnecessary.Pruning
No pruning is needed for this orchid. Leave the flowering spike to set and shed seed, then let the foliage die back on its own. Remove only fully withered leaves and stems in autumn.Container Growing
