Caladenia transitoria
eastern bronzehood orchid
Overview
Caladenia transitoria is a small deciduous terrestrial orchid native to eastern Australia, growing from an underground tuber that rests dormant through the dry summer. Each plant produces a single narrow, hairy basal leaf 1.5-4.5 inches (4-12 cm) long in autumn and winter, followed by a slender flowering stem 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) tall in spring. The stem carries one to a few small flowers with a hooded arrangement of sepals and petals in greenish to bronze tones and a short, marked lip. Like other ground orchids of its group, it depends on a partnership with soil fungi for germination and growth, and the tuber renews itself each season while the visible plant dies back over summer. It grows in open forest, woodland, and heath on well-drained sandy or gravelly soils, often among grasses and low shrubs. Flowering lasts only a few weeks and depends on autumn and winter rainfall. The species is small, seasonal, and easily overlooked, present above ground for just part of the year before retreating to its tuber.
Native Range
Native to eastern Australia, where it grows in open forest, woodland, and heath on well-drained soils. It occurs as scattered colonies among grasses and low ground cover, emerging after autumn rains.Suggested Uses
Grown by orchid specialists in containers and native terrestrial-orchid collections rather than open borders. Suited to seasonal pot culture under cover, where the dry summer rest can be controlled. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in spring, roughly September to November, after the leaf has developed through the cooler months. Each stem holds one to a few small hooded flowers that last only a few weeks. Bloom depends heavily on adequate autumn and winter rainfall.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in dappled shade to filtered sun on free-draining sandy or gravelly soils low in nutrients. Moisture is needed through autumn, winter, and early spring during active growth, followed by a dry rest once the plant dies back for summer. The tuber sits dormant and dry through the hot months, and overwatering in summer causes rot. This is a specialist orchid grown by enthusiasts in pots of open, gritty mix rather than general garden beds. A natural fungal association in the soil aids establishment and is hard to replicate in cultivation. Growth and flowering follow the seasonal wet-dry cycle of its native habitat.Pruning
No pruning is required. The single leaf and flower stem wither naturally as the plant enters summer dormancy and can be cleared once fully dry. The tuber is left undisturbed below ground until the next season.Container Growing
