Overview
Armeria juniperifolia is a dwarf evergreen perennial that forms a dense, hummock-shaped cushion 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) tall and 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) wide. Native to the high mountains of central Spain, it grows in alpine scree conditions of bright light, lean soil, and sharp drainage. The leaves are narrow and needle-like, 0.2-0.5 inch (5-12 mm) long, grey-green, and densely packed into a tight mound that resembles a miniature conifer. From late spring, rounded flower heads about 0.5 inch (12 mm) across rise on stems 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) tall, in shades of pale pink to lilac-pink. Each cushion carries dozens of these short-stemmed heads over several weeks. The plant withstands wind, drought, and poor soils once established, but it declines quickly in heavy, wet ground and in humid summer climates where the dense cushion traps moisture and rots. Growth is slow, and a plant reaches full cushion size in two to three years. Its scale suits troughs, alpine beds, and crevice plantings rather than open borders.

Native to the mountains of central and northern Spain, particularly the Sierra de Gredos, where it grows on exposed granite screes and rocky alpine turf at high elevation.Suggested Uses

Grow in full sun in gritty, sharply drained soil, such as loam blended with grit or coarse sand. Water during establishment, then sparingly, as the cushion rots in soils that stay wet. Trapped humidity around the crown is a common cause of failure, so an open, airy position with a gravel collar around the base helps. Rich feeding loosens the tight habit and is rarely needed. In zones 5 to 7 the plant is hardy without winter protection, though a pane of glass over the cushion in very wet winters reduces rot.Pruning
