Softwood Cutting
/SOFT-wood KUT-ing/✂️ Propagation●● Intermediate
Also known as: greenwood cutting, green cutting
A stem cutting taken from the current season's new growth while it is still soft and pliable, typically in late spring to early summer. Softwood cuttings root quickly because the tissue is actively growing and cells are still dividing, but they are also more prone to wilting and fungal attack. High humidity (mist or dome) is essential. Many deciduous shrubs, perennials, and houseplants root readily from softwood cuttings.
Etymology
Old English softe (soft) + wudu (wood, timber) + cutting
Example
“Hydrangea softwood cuttings taken in June root within 2–3 weeks under mist.”
