Scion
/SY-un/✂️ Propagation●● Intermediate
In grafting, the scion is a shoot, bud, or piece of stem from the cultivar being propagated. It is joined to the rootstock and becomes the aerial portion of the plant (trunk, branches, leaves, fruit). The scion determines the variety characteristics while the rootstock influences vigor and adaptability.
Etymology
Old French cion (shoot, twig), possibly from Latin secare (to cut)
Example
“Collect scion wood from the desired apple variety in late winter while trees are fully dormant.”
