Saxatilis
/sak-SAT-ih-lis/🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate
Also known as: saxatile
A habitat epithet indicating the plant naturally grows in rocky, stony places — among boulders, on scree slopes, or in the crevices of rocky outcrops. Distinct from rupestris (of cliffs), saxatilis implies plants growing in and among loose stones and boulders rather than on sheer rock faces.
Etymology
From Latin saxatilis, meaning "found among rocks," from saxum (rock, stone) + -atilis (suffix denoting habitat).
Example
“Aubrieta deltoidea subsp. saxatilis and Alyssum saxatile (now Aurinia saxatilis) are classic rock garden plants whose natural home among rocky limestone outcrops their epithet records.”
