A habitat epithet indicating the plant naturally grows among rocks, on cliff faces, or in stony, rocky terrain. Such plants are typically adapted to excellent drainage, shallow soils, and exposed conditions, making them excellent choices for rock gardens.

Etymology

From Latin rupes (rock, cliff) + -estris (suffix denoting habitat).

Example

Pinus sylvestris var. scotica and Saxifraga rupestris both inhabit rocky outcrops and cliff ledges, the epithet signaling their tolerance for shallow, stony soils.
