/rih-PAH-ree-us/
🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: riparia, riparium

A habitat epithet indicating a plant that naturally colonises the banks and margins of rivers and larger waterways. Riparian plants are adapted to periodic flooding, wet soils, and shifting substrates, and are valuable in erosion control and waterway restoration. Appears as riparius (masculine), riparia (feminine), or riparium (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin riparius, meaning "of the riverbank," from ripa (bank, shore of a river).

Example

Carex riparia (greater pond sedge) and Salix fragilis, a classic riparian willow, both naturally line the edges of rivers and large streams where their root systems help stabilise banks.
