Raphides are microscopic, needle-like crystals of calcium oxalate packed in specialized cells called idioblasts. When the cell is damaged (by chewing), raphides shoot outward and penetrate mucous membranes, causing intense burning and swelling. This defense mechanism is found throughout the Araceae family, including Monstera, Pothos, Dieffenbachia, and Philodendron.
