🔬 Anatomy●●● Advanced

Also known as: vascular cambium

A lateral meristem — a cylinder of dividing cells between the bark and wood of woody plants. The vascular cambium produces xylem (wood) inward and phloem (bark) outward, enabling secondary growth and stem thickening.

Etymology

From Medieval Latin cambium, meaning "exchange," from cambiare (to exchange).

Example

Grafting succeeds when the cambium layers of rootstock and scion are aligned.
