    The upper angle formed between a leaf (or petiole) and the stem from which it grows. Axillary buds form in this angle and can develop into lateral branches, flowers, or thorns.

    Etymology

    From Latin axilla, meaning "armpit."

    Tomato suckers develop from the axils between the main stem and leaf branches.
