Tulipa 'Groenland'
Viridiflora tulip
Garden origin (species from central Asia and Turkey)
Overview
Tulipa 'Groenland' is a Viridiflora tulip, a bulbous perennial in the lily family grown for its green-streaked spring flowers. It grows 18-20 inches (45-50 cm) tall from a bulb, with a few broad, grey-green strap-shaped leaves at the base. In mid to late spring, usually late April to May, each stem carries a single upright, goblet-shaped flower 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) long. The petals are soft rose-pink along the edges with a broad, feathered green flame running up the center of each, the green marking that defines the Viridiflora group. The flowers last two to three weeks in cool weather and close at night and in dull conditions. Like other tulips, it grows from a bulb planted in autumn, flowers once each spring, and dies back to dormancy by early summer. All parts contain tuliposides and are toxic if eaten, and the bulb sap can irritate skin. One limitation is that garden tulips often weaken and flower less in their second and later years, so they are frequently treated as short-lived or replaced with fresh bulbs.
Native Range
Tulipa 'Groenland' is a garden cultivar of the Viridiflora group and does not occur in the wild. Garden tulips descend from species native to the mountains and steppes of central Asia, Turkey, and the eastern Mediterranean.Suggested Uses

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Tulipa 'Groenland' in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Plant bulbs 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) deep in autumn, after the soil has cooled. Wet summer soil rots dormant bulbs, so sharp drainage or lifting after the leaves die back improves survival. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.0 to 7.5 suits it, and a low feed as growth starts supports flowering. Leave the foliage to yellow and die back to feed the bulb. Flowering weakens in later years, so replacing bulbs every few years maintains the display.Pruning
Remove the faded flower after bloom so the bulb does not put energy into seed. Leave the leaves until they yellow and wither, then clear them. No other pruning is needed.Pruning Schedule
