Sesleria heufleriana
Balkan moor grass
Overview
Sesleria heufleriana is a cool-season, evergreen to semi-evergreen ornamental grass forming a dense tuft 10-16 inches (25-40 cm) tall, with flower stems reaching 18-24 inches (45-60 cm). The narrow leaves are two-toned, dark glossy green on the upper surface and blue-white beneath, so the clump shifts in color as the foliage moves. Flowering begins early, in March to April, with slender spikes that open dark purple-black and shed silvery-white pollen, held just above the foliage. The clump stays low and tidy, spreading slowly without running. Foliage holds through mild winters and may brown at the tips in hard cold. Old leaves can persist among new growth, dulling the clump if not combed out. Growth is moderate, with plants reaching full size in 2-3 years.
Native Range
Native to southeastern Europe, including the Balkan Peninsula and the Carpathian region, where it grows on limestone slopes, in open woodland, and on rocky grassland.Suggested Uses
Grown in borders, gravel gardens, and mass plantings as a low edging or groundcover grass, spaced 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. Used along paths and in dry, sunny or lightly shaded sites. Combines with spring bulbs and other low perennials. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil across a wide pH range, including dry and alkaline ground. Established plants tolerate drought and need little water. As a cool-season grass, it makes most of its growth in spring and autumn and may slow in summer heat. Combing or raking out old foliage in late winter keeps the clump fresh, since this grass is not cut hard like warm-season types. Few pests or diseases affect it. Plants are long-lived and rarely need division.Pruning
Comb out dead leaves by hand or rake in late winter to early spring rather than cutting the whole clump to the ground, as hard cutting can damage this evergreen grass. Spent flower stems can be removed in summer. No other pruning is needed.Pruning Schedule
