Scaevola calendulacea
dune fan-flower
Coastal eastern and southern Australia
Overview
Scaevola calendulacea is a prostrate, mat-forming perennial of the family Goodeniaceae, reaching 4–12 inches (10–30 cm) tall and spreading 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) across. Stems trail along the sand and root at the nodes. The fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves measure 1–2.5 inches (2.5–6 cm) long, are bright green to yellow-green, and clasp the stem. Flowers are fan-shaped with all five lobes arranged on one side of the corolla, 0.5–0.8 inch (12–20 mm) across, and range from blue to mauve with a paler throat. The corolla lobes are cupped and bearded inside. Flowering occurs through much of the year, peaking in spring and summer. The fruit is a fleshy drupe about 0.3 inch (8 mm) wide, ripening from green to purple-black. S. calendulacea grows on coastal foredunes and sand of eastern and southern Australia, where it binds loose sand against wind. It tolerates salt spray, wind, and nutrient-poor sandy soil but does not persist in heavy, poorly drained soils or in deep shade. Growth slows in cold inland sites away from maritime influence.
Native Range
Native to coastal eastern and southern Australia, from Queensland through New South Wales and Victoria to South Australia and Tasmania, on foredunes and sandy shores.Suggested Uses
Used as a groundcover for coastal sand stabilisation, on foredunes, and in seaside gardens with sandy soil. Suited to rockeries, embankments, and containers where drainage is sharp. Spaced 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) apart for groundcover plantings. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Scaevola calendulacea in full sun in coarse, sharply drained sandy soil. It withstands salt spray, coastal wind, and extended dry periods once established. Water is needed mainly during establishment or prolonged drought, as established plants need little supplemental irrigation. Soils that stay wet or heavy with clay cause root rot and stem dieback. The species sets seed readily and also layers where stems contact moist sand. Frost in inland sites slows growth and can kill exposed stems.Pruning
Light trimming of trailing stems in spring contains spread and encourages branching. Dead or frost-damaged stems can be removed as growth resumes. No formative pruning is required.Container Growing
