Overview
Phoenix roebelenii is the pygmy date palm, growing 48-120 inches (120-300 cm) tall with a slender trunk 3-5 inches (7-13 cm) in diameter — the most compact species in the Phoenix genus. Soft arching pinnate fronds 36-48 inches (90-120 cm) with narrow thread-like leaflets 6-8 inches (15-20 cm), creating a softer textured crown than the stiff-leaved larger species (P. dactylifera, P. sylvestris, P. canariensis). Short spines 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) on the lower petiole bases — shorter and less dangerous than the 3-6 inch (7-15 cm) spines of P. sylvestris and P. canariensis, but still sharp. Often sold and planted as multi-stemmed clusters of 3 palms in a single pot, creating a grouped canopy. Small dark fruit 0.5 inch (12 mm) — edible but thin-fleshed. Dioecious: separate male and female plants. Native to Southeast Asia (Laos, Vietnam, southwestern China), growing along riverbanks — unlike the arid-origin larger Phoenix species. Frost-tender: foliage damage at 30°F (-1°C). More moisture-tolerant than the desert Phoenix species, though still requires well-draining soil. Full sun to partial shade. Widely used as an indoor/patio palm in containers. Non-toxic. Growth rate is slow — 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) per year. Containers of 5-10 gallons (20-40 liters). Zones 9-11.
Native Range
Native to Southeast Asia — Laos, Vietnam, and southwestern China, growing along riverbanks in the Mekong River basin.Suggested Uses
Grown in containers of 5-10 gallons (20-40 liters) on patios and indoors, or in the ground in zones 9-11. The compact size suits small gardens and entryways. Often planted as multi-stemmed groups of 3. Short spines on lower petioles. Non-toxic.How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Full sun to partial shade. Well-draining soil. Frost-tender at 30°F (-1°C). Short spines on lower petioles. Often multi-stemmed (3 per pot). Non-toxic. Widely used as an indoor/patio palm. Drought-tolerant once established. Zones 9-11.Pruning
Dead or yellowed lower fronds are removed by cutting flush with the trunk. Short petiole spines mean gloves are useful during the work. Green fronds are left in place. The compact crown is self-maintaining.Pruning Schedule
