Orchis mascula
early purple orchid
Europe, North Africa, and western Asia
Overview
Orchis mascula is a tuberous, terrestrial orchid growing 6-24 inches (15-60 cm) tall from a pair of underground egg-shaped tubers. A basal rosette of glossy, strap-shaped leaves 3-8 inches (7.5-20 cm) long, usually marked with dark purple-brown spots, appears in early spring. A single erect stem carries a dense cylindrical spike of 10 to 50 flowers from April to June. Each flower is purple to magenta, occasionally pink or white, about 0.4-0.6 inch (1-1.5 cm) across, with a three-lobed lower lip and a long upward-curving spur. The flowers carry a faint scent and produce no nectar reward, relying on deceiving early bumblebees for pollination. Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, O. mascula grows in deciduous woodland, scrub, and unimproved grassland on neutral to calcareous soils. It depends on soil fungi for germination and early growth, which makes it slow to establish and intolerant of transplanting. Plants go dormant by midsummer after seed set. It is hardy to USDA zone 5.
