Overview
Monotropa hypopitys is a perennial woodland herb in the heath family that contains no chlorophyll and makes none of its own food. The whole plant is waxy and pale yellow, tan, or reddish, standing 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) tall, with scale-like reduced leaves instead of green foliage. Each stem ends in a nodding cluster of several tubular, bell-shaped flowers about 0.4-0.6 inch (10-15 mm) long; after pollination the cluster straightens to stand upright as the seed capsules form. Monotropa hypopitys lives by tapping into the fungi that form mycorrhizal partnerships with the roots of nearby trees, drawing carbon from the tree through the shared fungal network rather than from sunlight. Because of this three-way dependence, it appears only in established forest with the right fungi and trees, and it cannot be transplanted or grown in a garden. It pushes up through leaf litter in summer and fall, often near pines, oaks, or beeches, then dies back after seeding. The plant blackens as it dries and persists as a dark, brittle stalk into winter.
Native Range
Monotropa hypopitys has a broad range across the cooler forests of the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and Asia. It grows in shaded, humus-rich woodland, especially under pines, oaks, and beeches, where its fungal hosts are present.Suggested Uses
Not used in gardens, since it cannot be grown or transplanted. It is of interest to botanists and naturalists as a plant that lives entirely on fungi rather than sunlight. In natural woodland it is read as a sign of an intact, healthy mycorrhizal community. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs from early summer into fall, often June to October depending on region, when the pale stems emerge from the forest floor. The nodding flower clusters are visited by bumblebees. After pollination the cluster turns upright and ripens dry seed capsules holding dust-like seeds.
