Luzula meridionalis
common wood-rush
Overview
Luzula meridionalis is a tufted, grass-like perennial in the family Juncaceae, forming low clumps 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) tall and 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) wide. The flat, grass-like leaves are 2-5 mm wide, soft, and fringed along the margins with long, white hairs that separate wood-rushes from true grasses and sedges. Foliage is mid- to dark green. Small brown to chestnut flowers are grouped in loose or compact clusters on slender stems held above the leaves in spring; each flower has six papery tepals. The fruit is a small three-seeded capsule. The species grows in southeastern Australia in moist, shaded habitats including damp forest, gullies, and grassland, often among rocks or leaf litter. It tolerates cool, moist conditions and light frost, and spreads slowly by short rhizomes to form a low groundcover. Growth is modest, and clumps remain compact. In cultivation it requires consistently moist, humus-rich soil and shelter from hot afternoon sun. Foliage can brown at the tips during prolonged dry spells or in full exposure. Several closely related wood-rush species occur in the same range and are separated by flower-cluster shape and seed detail.
Native Range
Luzula meridionalis occurs in southeastern Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. It grows in moist, shaded habitats such as damp forest, gullies, and grassland, often among rocks or leaf litter.Suggested Uses
Planted as a shade groundcover, woodland underplanting, and edging along moist, sheltered borders. Suited to damp gullies, rain gardens, and cool courtyards. Combines with ferns and other shade perennials in moist plantings. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Luzula meridionalis in part to full shade in consistently moist, humus-rich soil. Water to keep the root zone damp, particularly through warm months, as the plant does not tolerate prolonged drought. It withstands cool conditions and light frost. A leaf-litter mulch retains moisture and mimics its woodland habitat. Foliage browns at the tips in full sun or dry soil. Division of established clumps in autumn or early spring propagates the plant.Pruning
Comb out or trim browned foliage in late winter before new growth begins. Luzula meridionalis needs little pruning beyond removal of spent leaves and flower stems. Clumps regenerate from the base each season.Container Growing
