Leucopogon microphyllus
small-leafed white beard
Overview
Leucopogon microphyllus is a small evergreen shrub in the family Ericaceae, growing 12-40 inches (30-100 cm) tall with a wiry, erect to spreading habit. The tiny leaves are crowded along the stems, 0.1-0.3 inch (3-8 mm) long, narrow, stiff, and pointed. Small white tubular flowers about 0.1-0.2 inch (3-5 mm) long line the upper stems in spring; the inner surface of each petal lobe is densely bearded with white hairs, the feature behind the common name beard heath. Small rounded fruits follow the flowers. The species grows in southeastern Australia in heath, dry sclerophyll forest, and woodland on sandy and rocky well-drained soils, often on exposed slopes and ridges. It withstands drought, frost, and exposure once established. In cultivation it requires full sun to light shade and sharp drainage; it is sensitive to phosphorus and root disturbance and declines in wet, heavy soils. Growth is slow, and plants form a low, twiggy mound. The flowers carry a light scent and draw small pollinators. Heath shrubs of this group can be hard to establish and are slow to recover from disturbance.
Native Range
Leucopogon microphyllus occurs in southeastern Australia, across New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. It grows in heath, dry sclerophyll forest, and woodland on sandy and rocky well-drained soils, often on exposed slopes and ridges.Suggested Uses
Planted in heath and native gardens, rockeries, and low-phosphorus plantings with sharp drainage. Suited to exposed, sandy sites and slopes. The small white flowers draw native bees and other small pollinators in spring. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Leucopogon microphyllus in full sun to light shade in sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil. Water lightly during establishment, then reduce frequency as the plant withstands dry conditions. It is sensitive to phosphorus, so standard fertilisers are unsuitable; low-phosphorus native blends are used where feeding is needed. Wet, heavy, or poorly drained soils cause root decline. Growth is slow, and plants resent root disturbance once settled. Light tip pruning after flowering keeps the habit compact.Pruning
Tip prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, twiggy habit. Leucopogon microphyllus recovers slowly from hard cuts into bare old wood. Spent growth is trimmed sparingly to limit stress on the plant.Container Growing
