Lagenophora stipitata
blue bottle-daisy
South-eastern Australia and New Zealand
Overview
Lagenophora stipitata is a small rosette-forming perennial herb reaching 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) high in flower and spreading 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) across. The leaves form a flat basal rosette, each leaf spoon-shaped, 0.4-1.5 inches (1-4 cm) long, green, with shallow rounded teeth along the margins. Single small daisy flower heads, 0.3-0.5 inch (8-12 mm) across, are held on slender leafless stalks above the rosette; the narrow ray florets are white, often tinged blue or mauve, around a yellow centre. Flowering occurs mainly in spring and summer. The seed heads develop sticky seeds that attach to passing animals. Growth is low and slow, with the plant spreading mainly by seed rather than runners. It grows in damp grassy ground and lawns, where it can persist as a small weed. The whole plant remains low, with only the flower stalks rising above the grass.
Native Range
Native to south-eastern Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South-East Asia. Grows in moist grassland, lawns, woodland clearings, and along tracks in damp, well-drained soils.Suggested Uses
Used in native lawn substitutes, damp rockeries, and woodland ground layers, spaced 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) apart. Suits informal, moist plantings where a very low groundcover is wanted. The seeding habit can spread it into surrounding lawn and beds. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in part shade to full sun in moist, well-drained soils. Water to keep the soil damp, as the small rosette declines in dry conditions. Tolerates light to moderate frost. Spreads by seed and can appear in lawns and damp beds. Few pests are recorded. Remove spent flower stalks to limit self-seeding where spread is not wanted.Pruning
No structural pruning is needed. Remove spent flower stalks to reduce self-seeding. The low rosette tolerates mowing and resprouts from the base.Pruning Schedule
