Isopogon anethifolius
narrow-leaf drumsticks
Overview
Isopogon anethifolius is an evergreen shrub in the family Proteaceae reaching 5-10 feet (1.5-3 m) tall and 5-8 feet (1.5-2.5 m) wide, with an upright, many-stemmed habit. Stems are reddish when young and carry terete, finely divided needle-like leaves 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) long. Round yellow flower heads 1-1.5 inches (25-40 mm) across open at the branch tips, mainly in spring and early summer. After flowering, the heads develop into grey, woody, globular cones about 0.8-1 inch (20-25 mm) wide that hold seed for years and stay on the plant. The persistent cones give rise to the common name drumsticks. Plants regenerate after fire from a woody lignotuber at the base. Growth is moderate, with plants reaching full size in 4-6 years. The shrub tolerates dry periods once established but is prone to root rot in poorly drained soil and is sensitive to high-phosphorus fertilisers.
Native Range
Native to New South Wales, Australia, where it grows in heath and dry sclerophyll woodland on sandstone-derived soils. Found mainly in the Sydney Basin and adjacent ranges at 300-3,000 feet (90-900 m) elevation.Suggested Uses
Planted in low-water, native, and coastal gardens in well-drained positions, spaced 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) apart. The yellow flower heads and persistent woody cones are cut for fresh and dried arrangements. Grows in large containers of at least 10 gallons (38 L) with a free-draining low-phosphorus mix.How to Identify

Bloom Information
Yellow flower heads open mainly from September to December in its native range, with peak bloom in spring. Individual heads last 2-4 weeks, and a plant flowers over 6-8 weeks. Woody cones develop after flowering and persist on the plant for several years.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in well-drained sandy or gravelly soil in full sun to light shade, matching its sandstone heath origins. Established plants tolerate 3-5 weeks without rain, while young plants need regular water through the first summer. Sharp drainage is needed, as the roots are damaged by waterlogging and by Phytophthora spp. root rot in heavy soils. Standard fertilisers high in phosphorus harm the roots, so low-phosphorus native blends are used. Plants resprout from a lignotuber after fire or hard cutting. Scale insects occasionally appear on the stems.Pruning
Light pruning after flowering keeps the shrub compact and removes spent flower heads before they form woody cones. Cutting back into older wood is tolerated because the plant reshoots from the lignotuber. Pruning is kept to no more than one-third of the growth in a season.Pruning Schedule
