Gaudium laevigatum
coast teatree
Overview
Gaudium laevigatum, formerly Leptospermum laevigatum, is an evergreen shrub or small tree reaching 6.5-20 feet (2-6 m) tall and 6.5-13 feet (2-4 m) wide, often developing a gnarled trunk and spreading canopy with age. The grey-green leaves are obovate, 0.4-1.2 inches (1-3 cm) long, with a small point at the tip and an aromatic scent when crushed. White five-petalled flowers about 0.6-0.8 inch (1.5-2 cm) across cover the branches in spring. Woody capsules 0.2-0.3 inch (5-8 mm) wide follow and persist on the stems for several years, releasing seed after fire or branch death. Bark is grey and peels in thin strips on older trunks. Native to coastal dunes of southeastern Australia, it stabilises sand and tolerates salt-laden wind, but it has naturalised beyond its range and is recorded as a weed in South Africa, California, and parts of Australia outside its native distribution. It withstands drought once established and grows in low-fertility sandy soils. Light frost is tolerated, limiting cultivation to USDA zones 9-11.
Native Range
Native to coastal southeastern Australia, including Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, and South Australia, where it grows on dunes and sandy coastal heath. It has naturalised in South Africa, California, and beyond its native range within Australia.Suggested Uses
Planted for coastal dune stabilisation, windbreaks, and informal screening in sandy seaside gardens. Within its native range it supports dune revegetation, while outside it is being replaced with local non-weedy species. How to Identify
