Eucalyptus incrassata
ridge-fruited mallee
Overview
Eucalyptus incrassata is a multi-stemmed mallee eucalypt that grows 2-8 m (6.5-26 ft) tall, regenerating from a woody underground lignotuber after fire or drought. The smooth bark is grey to brownish over a reddish or coppery new layer and is shed in ribbons, while the adult leaves are thick, glossy green, lance-shaped, and 5-10 cm (2-4 in) long. Cream to pale yellow flowers, occasionally tinged red, are borne in clusters of up to seven through autumn, winter, and into spring, followed by distinctly ribbed, barrel-shaped woody capsules 0.8-1.5 cm (0.3-0.6 in) long that give the species its common name. It is adapted to semi-arid mallee scrub and sandy heath, tolerating poor soils, extended drought, and exposure. The lignotuber lets it resprout after the multiple stems are damaged. In cultivation it needs an open, sunny position and free-draining soil; it performs poorly in humid, high-rainfall climates and shaded sites, where stems become sparse and fungal leaf spotting increases.
Native Range
Native to southern Australia, where it occurs across semi-arid regions of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and south-western New South Wales.Suggested Uses
Used in low-water and native gardens, windbreaks, and revegetation of sandy or semi-arid sites. Suited to coastal and inland plantings where drought and exposure limit other species. Also grown as a habitat and nectar source for native birds and insects. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowers open from autumn through winter and into early spring, carried in stalked clusters of up to seven cream to pale yellow blooms. The nectar-rich flowers draw honeyeaters, native bees, and other insects. Woody ribbed capsules develop after flowering and persist on the stems for months.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun on free-draining sandy, loamy, or gravelly soils with a pH of about 5.5-7.5. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and needs little or no supplemental water in suitable climates. Humid, high-rainfall, or poorly drained sites reduce vigour and encourage fungal leaf problems. It tolerates moderate frost and salt-laden coastal wind. Light watering through the first one to two summers aids establishment. The lignotuber allows recovery after damage, so cut or frosted stems regenerate from the base.Pruning
Little pruning is needed beyond removing dead or crossing stems in late winter. Plants respond well to hard cutting back, regenerating from the lignotuber where a denser multi-stemmed form is wanted. Spent capsules are retained and need no removal.Pruning Schedule
