Overview
Drymocallis is a genus of about 30 species of herbaceous perennials in the rose family (Rosaceae), native to temperate North America and Eurasia and segregated from the cinquefoils (Potentilla). Plants form a basal rosette and erect, branching flowering stems 20-70 cm (8-28 in) tall, with pinnately compound leaves of toothed leaflets. Stems, leaves, and flower clusters are densely covered in glandular hairs that make the plants sticky and often faintly scented, the source of the common name sticky cinquefoil. The five-petalled flowers are 8-15 mm across, usually pale yellow to cream or white, and clustered at the stem tips; the petals are often shorter than or about equal to the green sepals, giving a half-open look. Flowering is mainly in late spring and summer. Drymocallis grows in open woodland, meadows, rocky slopes, and roadside banks in well-drained soil. The flowers are small and pale, and the plants are grown mainly in native-plant and naturalistic settings rather than in formal borders.
Native Range
Native to temperate North America and Eurasia, with many species in western North America, where they grow from foothill meadows to montane forest openings.Suggested Uses
Grown in native-plant gardens, wildflower meadows, and naturalistic or rock-garden plantings, where the sticky foliage and pale flowers suit informal schemes. The clumps support native bees and other small pollinators in restoration plantings. How to Identify
