Cryptandra tomentosa
prickly cryptandra
Overview
Cryptandra tomentosa is a small, rigid shrub in the family Rhamnaceae, growing 12-39 inches (30-100 cm) tall and 16-39 inches (40-100 cm) wide. The intricately branched, often spine-tipped branchlets are covered in grey woolly hairs, giving the plant a stiff, tangled outline. The tiny leaves are 0.04-0.12 inch (1-3 mm) long, crowded, with margins rolled under to a woolly underside. In late winter and spring the shrub carries clusters of small tubular white to cream flowers about 0.12-0.2 inch (3-5 mm) long, each subtended by brown papery bracts that persist after the petals fade. The flowers sit close to the stems among the foliage. Cryptandra tomentosa grows on shallow, rocky, well-drained soils in open forest and heath and is adapted to dry, exposed sites. It is slow-growing and resents wet, poorly drained ground, where it is short-lived. The rigid, spiny habit makes it dense at the base, and the persistent bracts hold a pale tone on the bush long after flowering.
Native Range
Cryptandra tomentosa is native to south-eastern Australia, occurring in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, and southern Queensland. It grows in dry sclerophyll forest, woodland, and heath, typically on shallow rocky or sandy soils.Suggested Uses
Used in dry rockeries, gravel gardens, and low-water native plantings on free-draining soils. Its rigid, prickly habit suits low informal screening and creates cover for small birds. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering runs mainly from late winter through spring, around August to November in its native range. The small tubular white to cream flowers are massed along the branchlets and are lightly scented. Brown papery bracts remain on the stems after the petals drop, holding a pale colour into summer.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Cryptandra tomentosa in full sun on light, gritty, sharply drained soil. It is adapted to dry, low-nutrient ground and establishes most reliably where water never pools around the roots. Water lightly until established, then reduce watering, as the shrub is prone to root rot in damp or heavy soils. It withstands frost, heat, and exposed positions once settled. Feeding is rarely needed; apply native fertiliser sparingly, if at all, on these naturally lean soils. Growth is slow, and plants are most durable on free-draining sites.Pruning
Light tip pruning after flowering keeps the shrub dense and compact. Dead or frost-damaged branchlets can be removed in spring. Hard pruning into bare old wood is poorly tolerated and rarely resprouts.Pruning Schedule
