Overview
Cryptandra is a genus of around 50 species of small, wiry evergreen shrubs in the buckthorn family, almost all endemic to Australia. Plants are mostly low and twiggy, 4-60 inches (10-150 cm) tall, with short, crowded, often heath-like leaves that may end in a small spine. From late winter into spring the branchlets carry dense clusters of tiny tubular flowers, usually white or cream and sometimes pink-tinged, each about 0.1-0.2 inch (3-5 mm) long. A papery flower tube often persists around the developing fruit, which is a small dry capsule. The genus grows in heathland, mallee, and dry sclerophyll woodland, typically on sandy, gravelly, or rocky low-nutrient soils. Many species are confined to small areas and several are of conservation concern in the wild. In cultivation the shrubs are grown in rockeries and native gardens for their massed small flowers and compact form, though they can be short-lived and resent root disturbance. They need sharp drainage and full sun, and they tolerate drought once established but decline in heavy or wet soils.
Native Range
Cryptandra is almost entirely endemic to Australia, where it is found in every mainland state, with a single species extending to New Zealand. It grows in heath, mallee shrubland, and dry open woodland on sandy and rocky low-nutrient soils.Suggested Uses
Cryptandra is grown in Australian rockeries, native and water-wise gardens, and containers for its compact form and massed spring flowers. It suits sandy, free-draining banks and low-maintenance dry plantings. Several species are also of interest in conservation and revegetation of heathland. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Most species flower from late winter into spring, broadly July to November in Australia, with some flowering after summer rain. The small tubular flowers open in tight clusters and last several weeks. Persistent papery tubes remain on the branchlets well after the flowers fade.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Cryptandra grows in full sun and sharp-draining sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils low in nutrients. Established plants tolerate drought and poor ground but are intolerant of wet, heavy, or rich soils, where root rot and sudden collapse are common. The shrubs resent root disturbance, so container-raised plants are set out young and left undisturbed. Low-phosphorus feeding suits these natives, which are sensitive to phosphate. Many species are naturally short-lived, persisting five to ten years before needing replacement. A gritty, free-draining mix and full exposure give the steadiest results in cultivation.Pruning
Light tip pruning after flowering keeps Cryptandra bushy and removes the spent floral tubes. The shrubs do not regenerate from old bare wood, so cutting stays within the leafy outer growth. Hard renovation pruning often kills these wiry plants.Container Growing
