Overview
Cryptandra spp. is a genus of around 50 species of small, wiry evergreen shrubs in the buckthorn family, almost all endemic to Australia. Plants are mostly low and twiggy, 4-60 inches (10-150 cm) tall, with short, crowded, often heath-like leaves that may end in a small spine. From late winter into spring the branchlets carry dense clusters of tiny tubular flowers, usually white or cream and sometimes pink-tinged, each about 0.1-0.2 inch (3-5 mm) long. A papery flower tube often persists around the developing fruit, which is a small dry capsule. The genus grows in heathland, mallee, and dry sclerophyll woodland, typically on sandy, gravelly, or rocky low-nutrient soils. Many species are confined to small areas and several are of conservation concern in the wild. In cultivation the shrubs are grown in rockeries and native gardens for their massed small flowers and compact form, though they can be short-lived and resent root disturbance. They need sharp drainage and full sun, and they tolerate drought once established but decline in heavy or wet soils.
