Overview
Anthurium clarinervium is the velvet cardboard anthurium — a popular foliage anthurium (grown for its leaves, NOT for colored spathes), growing 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall and wide. Deep dark green velvety matte heart-shaped leaves with bold silvery-white veining — the thick, rigid leaves have a 'cardboard' quality (stiffer and thicker than typical anthurium leaves). The 'clarinervium' means 'clear-veined', describing the prominent white vein pattern. This is a completely different type of anthurium from the flowering A. andraeanum: A. clarinervium is grown EXCLUSIVELY for its bold patterned foliage — the flowers are insignificant green spathes (remove them to redirect energy). Native to limestone karst regions of southern Mexico (Chiapas) — a rarely Mexican-native Anthurium species rather than South American. Needs well-draining aroid mix, bright indirect light, and humidity 50%+. Toxic.
